VORIN
GERMANY – audience side

German violin bow made for the trade post – World War I. During this era and earlier to the late 1800’s many German shops left off the maker’s name and origin on the stick. Many bows would have been branded with a French or Italian sounding name to market the bow. Purposely, for this type of bow there would have been no markings on the bow. This bow might have been placed in a violin outfit headed for sale at a music company. This bow is stamped “VORIN”- you don’t get a much better name than the Parisian maker Vorin. Why not. We have a real Vorin, made in Paris, for sale in the shop for $24K. Back to this bow, it is an excellent German bow with the name Vorin. I’ve had this stick in my collection for close to 45 years. Considering what has happened with pernambuco wood from Brazil in the last two years, the complete stoppage of use by the Brazilian government, is great to see these older bows begin to get completed and ready for sale. All making with pernambuco specie has been halted by the Brazilian government. Makers are scrambling to discover new woods and alternatives. Hence why I have decided to get all my bows in the workshop restored and ready for the showroom. The restorations can take many hours and/or weeks. Much of my work gets put on the back burner when customer violins and bows need to be completed. Currently, I’m on a one a week bow restoration rate.

This wood in this bow is beautiful orange/brown color fine grained pernambuco. This wood is old stock. The bow is light in the hand and easy to handle. Pernambuco specie, octagonal in section, and with a single mother-of-pearl eye frog. The slide is special; the full length in sterling silver and the heel butts up to the slide. The mounts are sterling. The frog contains pin work in the lining and the heel. The sterling winding has been replaced, the leather thumb is now in goat, and the button is a solid silver cap.

You may just be looking for an older bow- this is it. You may be looking for good quality workmanship- this is it. You may be looking for a sleeper, no famous maker’s name but a very good playing bow with gorgeous wood – this is it. A 100 plus year old bow in great condition, with the traditional pernambuco wood, a handmade frog which is neat and different, and a stick that plays well.
