Non-Stamped Beautiful Older Markneukirchen Violin Bow circa 1900
$1,200.00
The town of Markneukirchen was the German bow making hub for more than two and a half centuries. Many bows were not stamped with a maker’s name. As bow making became more of an art in itself makers began stamping their bows. This stick is excellent even though not stamped. The craftsmanship in the head, the stick, and all the aspects of the frog and endscrew reveal excellent hand work.
The bow has no markings on the stick itself nor on the silver. The heel and lining are completed in pin work. The head, frog, and endscrew are original to the bow. The bow is pernambuco specie, round in section, and mounted in nickel. We gave the bow the full spa treatment: cleaning, check over, removal of old winding and leathers, new bronze eye, and new winding. The stick was oiled a few times. The wood is a darker orange/brown and much darker at the frog area where it was handled over the years. We gave it a new silver tinsel winding with leathers matching the period and what was found on the stick. The frog is what we call a blind eye ebony frog, and the heel is one-piece, having a short porch on the bottom next to the slide. The mother-of-pearl slide is a classic abalone white with a very slight touch of color mixing light green, pink, and blue hues. Another German bow ready for someone’s violin.
