for J.R. Judd Violins anno 2024

We have a Guarneri del Gesu model violin that is professionally built and overseen by Chen Yunzhou, master luthier in the Shun Yi District of Beijing, China. The instrument has stunning color and wood choice. The Guarneri f holes are slightly broader and elongated; I’m talking a few thousandths of an inch. The waist is slightly broader, which adds to the sound projection, and the upper bout is narrower, allowing for ease of play in the higher positions. The instrument has a two-piece even-grain spruce top, gorgeous maple curl of medium-to-fine-width on the two-piece back plate and ribs. The violin is carved with a small concave channel in the plates before returning to the purfled edge. The fittings are carved in rosewood, and the pegs are fitted with ebony pins and collars. The oil varnish is exquisite in its orange/brown coloring, completed on a yellow and golden base, and it is tastefully antiqued. The violin is easy to get around on. The corpus length of the violin makes it comfortable for a player. The violin is new, but its appearance is as if it were an older instrument because of its antiquing, color shading, and clean lines.

Corpus 353.0 mm., Major Width 205.0 mm., Minor Width 166.0 mm., Rib Height 30.0 mm.

This is a warm and responsive instrument. It has a sound with plenty of drive on both sides of the aisle. (I’ve been playing in a lot of weddings lately). The violin will suit the player that wants to play with plenty of presence and energy. It puts out and retains a gorgeous personality on the lower register while the sound on the top is sweet and inviting. The instrument keeps opening the more I lay into the violin. In short, the violin rings. A player will feel the instrument resonate under the chin. The tone is very consistent on all four strings, and you will feel and love the overtones. The sound is different than playing on one of our older fine violins: it’s OK to be different. The violin has clarity of sound, nice sustain and an adult voice. The instrument has been hanging in the upstairs workshop for almost 11 months. It needed a complete set up: pegs, bridge, camber the fingerboard, nut, soundpost, tailpiece, and chinrest. I completed a B grade Despiau blank for the instrument. The overtones jump, getting a player to sit up and take notice of the violin. It will work for a fiddler as well as a player that plays out with strength to do solo work. If this were a French or German instrument it might fetch a price of twice the amount. A handmade violin at a great price.
