This bow was made in a very good bow making workshop with no known maker or origin on the stick. I believe this violin bow was made in a Romanian or a Czechian workshop. It is so well executed that it deserves the real maker’s name on the bow. Workshops, especially in the early 1900’s placed famous makers’ names on their bows and inside their instruments with labels to sell their items and blur the origin. Yes, French bows bring the most money so why not a French name on the bow. The Vuillaume stamp was placed on the bow to insure marketability of the bow. Vuillaume was a famous maker and owner of his shop in Paris (1825-1875). The firm was known for their expert work, ever growing collection of fine Cremonese violins to study and sell, famous apprentices and craftsmen, and fine bow makers, all who worked for and were influenced by Vuillaume.

The bow is in excellent condition, pernambuco specie, sterling silver fittings, and round in section. The frog is French in style, a Parisian eye model with rounded chamfers and a round ferrule. The bow sports clean lines and workmanship, impressively executed by a seasoned maker. The frog runs in an inlaid track that is well carved and also indicative of French influence. The track helps to keep the bow alignment perfectly and is another indication of bow making at a different level. The stick gradually broadens from behind the head throughout the stick until just before the silver winding. The three-piece button is very ornate with an octagonal faceted button with pearl in the middle section. The mother-of-pearl eyes and pearl slide are completed in white abalone, very classic in style. The bow feels light, plays off the string articulations well, and I can’t say enough nice things about the graduations and jewelry work. This sterling pernambuco violin bow is a gem for the price.
