Firenza (Italia) No. L089138
We have a fantastic sounding Italian trade violin. Firenza is the Italian name for the city of Florence. Florance is located in the section of Italy called Tuscany. The violin features a very nice tonewood spruce top with even and consistent grain and a two-piece maple back plate with no flame. The construction is very good with some handwork and its dimensions are right on. We have completely gone over the entire violin. We cambered the fingerboard, reworked the nut, cut a new bridge, soundpost, a new set of ebony pegs with brass diamond inserts, and matched with a new tailpiece, end button, and Guarneri model chin rest. The fittings are all in classic black ebony which adds to the pop of the color contrast of the violin. I did a few hours of varnish touch up work from years of being played. This is normal wear expected on an instrument that someone actually played. The violin has no issues and is very easy to get around on. This is an artistic Strad model considered commercial in its day, just after WW II. The oil varnish is all hand drawn and is a yellow/amber/brown with a touch of golden orange. The varnish is consistent throughout the violin.
Corpus 356.0 mm., Major Width 208.0 mm., Minor Width 168.00 mm., Rib Height29.5 – 30.0 mm.
The sound of the violin pops. The instrument has a deep resonant core and is very responsive. I like the richness of the bass and the clarity of the powerful treble side. The violin is even in its responsiveness and is pleasant to listen to. What a great surprise to hear a trade violin blow me away with the depth of sound and quick response. Don’t judge the book by its cover. Great sound, clean, crisp, powerful, and meaty. This instrument is a sleeper. A European instrument with a tremendous sound and in excellent condition.
