Are you looking for a great playing older gold mounted bow? Have you been looking for a 5-6K violin bow? I call this bow a sleeper. A great playing stick for not a lot of money. This bow was played for a lifetime by a professional player I knew for many years here in Pennsylvania. It was his favorite stick and is a pernambuco specie bow in both octagonal and round section; this is why I call it a hybrid. The ebony frog is mounted in gold and the end screw is a three-piece gold button. The frog is in good condition and has natural playing wear. The sharp edges are rounded off from hours of playing. The winding is completed in sterling silver. It was changed to enhance the balance of the bow long before I met the player and started doing work on his violins and bows. I acquired the bow from the family in 2018.
This bow has had a restorative spline I did on the head/tip of bow in 1998, many years ago. The pernambuco wood used for the restoration was an older, darker chocolate colored pernambuco bow. Don was only interested in making the bow functional because he liked the camber and strength of the bow. I splined the entire head/tip area of another older bow and grafted it onto the existing stick. I call this a hybrid restoration. Two to create one. The restoration came out well and the bow played wonderfully. I stand behind the spline and the bow 120%. The bow has been rehaired over 8 times since the restoration. The bow is firm in its make-up and simply feels great in the hand. The bow is worth taking out on trial.
New European handmade gold mounted bows in our current market sell for $3800 minimum. I have been using the bow for a little over two years, playing it with our worship team at church. October 7, 2024 I rehaired and cleaned the bow. I felt it’s time to find out if someone else loves the stick too. It has excellent playability, flex, and firmness. This is a very good no-name sleeper stick with 14-kt gold on the frog valued at $450 in weight.
