We have an Ernst Heinrich Roth model VII-R violin which is a reproduction of the Antonius Stradivarius 1722 style. The instrument is in excellent condition and is branded. The back is two pieces of highly flamed maple with medium-width flame which slightly descends from the center seam. The ribs, neck, and scroll are also highly flamed. The all match in degree of flame and are gorgeous. The table is of medium-width straight-grained spruce which widens slightly at the flanks. The varnish, original, is a red/orange/brown layered oil all hand drawn over a golden ground. The violin has gorgeous shading, and color in the varnish. Age and playing have given the varnish a beautiful soft patina. Nothing in my mind that subtracts. This instrument has tremendous bones, clean inside and out, and has beautiful crisp lines. The instrument is in excellent condition – no issues. Soon to turn 100 years old. It is a Wow!!
Corpus 358.0 mm., Major Width 212.0 mm., Minor Width 169.0mm., Rib Height 30.0 mm.
The sound is strong on all the voices. The response off the strings is tremendous. The bottom strings resonate with passion and a player will feel the violin pumping and putting out a mature tone. The instrument leans slightly to the darker side of sound, but also has strong brilliant overtones. I still come back to the fantastic evenness of sound over the entire violin. I simply love the sound. This Roth has a great look, full sweet sound, tonal clarity with maturity, and there are no flaws. This is an instrument for a serious player.
