EMILE DUPREE
FRANCE- butt end of the stick
We have a good 20th century viola bow of octagonal section, pernambuco specie in very good condition. The “Emile Dupree” name was a trade name used to sell bows before and after the Second World War. The stick shows the origin helping us to date the bow just prior to World War II and made in France. The bow was made for the Metropolitan Music Co. to be sold in America. Bows that were not branded with FRANCE on the butt end of the bows were made in Germany.
We replaced the winding with an imitation whalebone winding to bring the weight of the bow down and we replaced the thumb grip in goat leather. The bow feels very nice with the new balance and gram weight of 72.0 grams. The pernambuco viola bow is nickel mounted, has a Parisian eye frog that is fully lined with excellent color in the mother-of-pearl, and is finished with a three-piece endscrew. The bow is semi-firm with nice flex, handles very well, and has a good feel in my hand.
This is much better than an entrance bow into a pernambuco bow for a player. The orange/brown color is beautiful. The clarity of the wood and the visibility of the grain in the wood also caused me to notice the quality of this bow and put more time into the stick. Yup, a French trade bow that should find a home fast.
