Stamped:
This BAUSCH workshop bow is from the late 19th century to the early 20th century and it is a sterling silver mounted Bausch bow. This stamp/brand was used as the standard stamp for the Bausch workshop while these bows were made under the management of the Paulus family. To meet the demand, the bow industry developed and rose out of a remote area of eastern Germany near the Czech border, a region known as Western Bohemia. The center of the instrument making industry was the town of Markneukirchen in the state of Saxony. The Bausch family, makers from 1804-1875 were highly regarded, esteemed in the bow making area of the violin trade. There bows were known for their outstanding craftsmanship and playability. They made bows for four generations beginning with Ludwig Christian August Bausch in the 1820’s. The family made superb bows sold as their own and marketed unstamped bows to other shops in Germany such as the Heinrich Knopf workshop. The “BAUSCH” branded bows were still being made while the Bausch shop was under the management of the Paulus family from 1876 up to the 1920’s.
I’ve had this stick in my collection for close to 45 years. Considering what has happened with pernambuco wood from Brazil in the last two years, the complete stoppage of use by the Brazilian government, is great to see these older bows begin to get completed and ready for sale. Players are taking great notice and purchasing excellent, nicely restored older pernambuco bows. All making with pernambuco specie has been halted by the Brazilian government. Makers are scrambling to discover new woods and alternatives. Hence why I have decided to get all my 400 remaining sticks finally worked up, restored, and ready for the showrooms. The restorations can take many hours and/or weeks. Much of my own work gets put on the back burner when customer violins and bows need to be completed. Currently, I’m on a one bow per week restoration rate.
Our bow is sterling silver mount, round in section, choice, firm, pernambuco specie of orange/brown color. It is a sterling mounted bow with a three-piece end button. The tip was replaced, as well as the winding and leather thumb. The weight of the bow is now at a very manageable 60.0 grams. We replaced the winding with a silver woven tinsel and a green silk accent completed with a thumb leather in goat. I was totally into bringing this bow back to its earlier glory. It is a very nice bow. Great bone! The more I worked on the bow the better the bow polished up. This 100-plus year old bow is in excellent condition and is a fine example of the work put out by the Paulus family for the Bausch workshop name. This is highly valued bow, especially in light of what has happened to the sale of pernambuco from Brazil. Check out our entire inventory of pernambuco sticks. Try out more than one or two.
