for J.R. Judd Violins anno 2024

We have a Guarneri del Gesu model violin that is professionally built and overseen by Chen Yunzhou, master luthier in the Shun Yi District of Beijing, China. The instrument has stunning color and wood choice. The Guarneri (f) holes are slightly broader and elongated. I’m talking a few thousandths of an inch. The waist is slightly broader which adds to the sound projection and the upper bout is narrower, allowing for ease of play in the higher positions. The instrument has a two-piece even-grain spruce top, gorgeous maple curl in the back plate, ribs, neck, and scroll. The back plate is one-piece maple, a specially selected piece of maple that is very different. The violin is carved with a small concave swoop in the plate before returning to the purfled edge. The pegs are carved and fitted with pear wood pins and an end button to match with a recessed pear pin. The oil varnish is exquisite in its orange/brown coloring while it is tastefully antiqued, completed on a yellow/golden base. The violin is easy to get around on. It is very comfortable for a player. If you’re smaller in stature you may have found a perfect match. The violin is brand new but looks like it has some age with antiquing, color shading, and clean lines.

Corpus 352.0 mm., Major Width 204.0 mm., Minor Width 165.0 mm., Rib Height 29.0 mm.

This is a warm and responsive instrument. It has a sound with plenty of drive on the bottom end and power on the treble side. The violin will suit the player that wants to play with plenty of presence and energy. The sound on the top is amazing and the instrument keeps opening the more I lay into the violin. In short, the violin rings. A player will feel the instrument resonate under the chin. The tone is very consistent on all four strings, and you will feel the sustain and will fall in love with the overtones. The sound is different than playing on one of our older fine violins: it’s OK to be different. The violin has clarity of sound and gorgeous sustain. The sound should only grow on you as the instrument gets played in. The violin skipped right through puberty, having an adult voice and beautiful overtones. The instrument has been hanging in the upstairs workshop for almost 9 months. It needed a complete set up, pegs, bridge, camber the fingerboard, nut, soundpost, tailpiece, and chinrest. Finally competed! It will work for a fiddler as well as a player that plays out with strength to do solo work. The violin puts out and retains a gorgeous personality on the lower register. The sound is like your favorite 8 oz. filet cooked medium, with a pink center that you know will cut like butter and taste even better. If this were a German or French violin the instrument would be twice the price. A handmade violin at a great price. Wow!
