Neuner & Hornsteiner, Mittenwald c. 1811 – 1930 was a company founded in Mittenwald, Germany in the early 19th century by the Neuner and Hornsteiner families, both of whom were long established violin makers in the town. The first partnership was between Mathias Neuner IV and Cantius Hornsteiner. Credit is generally given to Anton Seitz Johann Neuner III who was born in 1809 and died in 1883, and was later the director of the firm, which was inherited by his son Ludwig (1840-1897). Under Ludwig, the company grew enormously, employing over 200 workers producing all grades and types of bowed instruments in a factory system. It was the advanced craftsmen that made the high quality instruments that survived and continued into the twentieth century. The next son of Ludwig, Hans Neuner (1878-1934), elevated the quality of their instruments one more time. The company folded in 1930.

Our violin has no issue. We have bushed the pegs and touched up a few of the blemishes in the varnish. The trade violin is in good condition and is modeled in a Stradivarius pattern. We have carved new ebony fittings for the violin and added a German Wittner tail piece for ease of tuning.

Corpus 359.0 mm., Major Width 206.0 mm., Minor Width 164.5 mm., rib Height 30.0 mm.

The violin’s sound is focused and strong. The arching of the violin lends itself to the strength in this instrument’s tone quality. This violin has strength and a little drive. The bottom is rich and there is no loss in the tone quality as you travel up into higher positions. The voices are expressive, responsive, and add to the nuance of the violin. All four strings are even in strength and the treble E and A strings lean to the brighter side. This violin would be a great fit for a player looking to try fiddling music and American bluegrass as well as a musician looking to be heard in and orchestra section.
