Johannes Siegfried Finkel was born in Markneukirchen in 1947. At 17 years old he began a bow-making apprenticeship with his father Seigfreid. After three years he moved to London to work for J & A Beare. Young J.S. Finkel also worked for William Moening and Hans Weisshaar in America, before taking over his father’s workshop in 1984.

Siegfried Finkel (1927-2010) the father, studied with and worked for his father-in-law, Paul Weidhaas in Germany before emigrating to Brienz, Switzerland and establishing his own workshop in 1952. He trained his son, Johannes Siegfried Finkel (b. 1947), who succeeded him in 1984 and trained the 4th generation of family bowmakers. The famous workshop has employed many makers of international repute and remains a highly respected bow shop in Europe. The Finkel name has been recognized for decades for its finest craftsmanship, and bows ranging from good student models to artist pieces suitable for the most demanding of players.

This J.S. Finkel viola bow demonstrates all the hallmarks of craftsmanship for which the Finkel name is known. This fine bow is Pernambuco specie, round in section, and sterling silver mounted with an ebony fully-lined frog. The head is gorgeous and very masculine and the stick is firm in its makeup and well balanced at 72.7 grams fully haired.
