We have a good quality German stick. Sterling silver mounted, pernambuco specie, round in section. The stick is choice pernambuco, light orange/brown in color. Why do pernambuco wood bows sound so good? It’s all in the wood. Subtle differences in the wood aren’t just important when making an instrument, they also affect the playing abilities of a finished bow. Making a bow that will pull the best sound from the pernambuco wood requires skill and craftsmanship, and bow making is one of few artistic crafts that has not been replicated with machinery. We also used all hand work to restore and bring this bow back to its original feel and look. We removed the old winding and leather, gave the bow a thorough cleaning, and just oiled the stick. We replaced the silver winding with new silver and a leather thumb grip which also helped bring the weight up half a gram. The ebony frog is classic Germany modelling: slightly elongated and fully lined. The frog has a single mother-of-pearl eye on each face. The bow has a good balance, it’s not clumsy at all. The slightly lighter overall weight makes the bow easy to handle. The silver heel is the only area I see pin work. The lining and three-piece endscrew/button is capped with mother-of-pearl and has no pins. This is an above-average commercial trade violin bow that is in excellent condition. The wood alone helps to set this bow up into a different level of a trade bow, definitely worth trying if a player is looking for a sterling silver mounted violin bow.
